How I Lost 100 Pounds and Kept it Off

My whole life I was overweight. Since I can remember I was always on some sort of diet. I tried everything. When I was in high school, I tried the South Beach Diet and it worked pretty well. However, the second I went off it, I gained all of the weight back, plus some more. By the time I graduated college, I was 230 pounds. At that point I had enough and made the decision to lose weight. I did not go on a fad diet, and I didn’t go to the gym constantly. My weight loss program was changing my diet, the way I ate and incorporated exercise into my day. My program led me to losing 100 pounds and keeping it off. Please note that I am not a doctor or any sort of trained professional, so if you are under directions of a doctor, follow what they say. What I am telling you is my own experience on how I manage to lose weight.

I lost 100 pounds changing the way I ate. I cut my portions in half of what I typically ate. Also, losing weight is about eating less, but do not stop eating to do it. What I did was eat several smaller meals throughout the day. For example, when I got up eat an English muffin with jelly and low-fat yogurt. Then mid morning I would eat a granola bar. My lunch would consist of a turkey sandwich and some pretzels. I would have a mid afternoon snack and then I would eat a normal dinner. By doing this, my appetite was not nearly as fierce.

Also, I did not deny myself anything. When I wanted some chocolate, I ate some. I just broke the candy bar in half, put the uneaten half away and ate the other part in another room. This way it would be a chore to get more, and I would think twice before trying to eat more. My thinking on this was that if I refused to eat it, I would keep thinking about it until I finally gave in and ate the whole thing. By just eating a little bit, I fulfilled my craving, but I did not consume 400 empty calories in one sitting.

There is nothing more that I hate than going to the gym. However, in order to successfully lose weight and keep it off, exercise is a must. So what I did was I became more active without a horrible workout. I started walking a lot. I parked way in the back of the parking lot and walked to the store. I carried my groceries to my car, when I could. I took the stairs instead of the elevator. When a place I needed to go was just down the road, I walked there. I took the harder path, up the hill to my house. It does not sound like a lot, but it really does help.

One last thing to consider is that if you are looking to lose significant weight and keep it off is that it takes time. It is unrealistic to think you can lose that much weight in only a few months. To lose a 100 pounds it took me two years. However, since 2006, I have maintained a weight of 130 pounds and have a much healthier lifestyle. Remember, it is a long road but once you are there at your destination, it is one of the best feelings ever.
