Every year, there are approximately 44,000 Americans that die from smoking. To make matters worse, there are other people that suffer from secondhand smoke. There are many bad effects of secondhand smoking.
Secondhand smoking, also known as passive smoking, is almost as dangerous as smoking the cigarette yourself. To be exposed to secondhand smoking is to inhale unfiltered tobacco. It has been said that secondhand smoking is more dangerous than smoking first hand because of this. It has been noted by the American Heart Association as well as by the US Surgeon General that secondhand smoking versus those that are not near smoke have an upwards of 30% more risk of having heart disease. Lung cancer is also dangerous to secondhand smokers, as they pose a 25% higher chance of having this debilitating disease. It has been further noted that secondhand smoke has been named as a carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Alternatively, there are individuals and studies that have proven that there is not too much left to the belief that secondhand smoking has any effects on your health whatsoever. One study showed that there is not a significant link to secondhand smoking and direct smoking of the cigarette itself. The individuals that were exposed to the secondhand smoke did not have significant enough numbers to even document any effects of the passive smoking.
One of the most susceptible groups of individuals that can have poor effects of passive smoking is children. The effects of secondhand smoking on children, especially on fetuses, can lead to irreversible damage. It is noted that many infants that are exposed to secondhand smoking have died of SIDS, as well as being born prematurely and with very low birth weight. Many children that are exposed to secondhand smoke are sick quite frequently, especially with multiple respiratory problems.
With the above information given, it is clear that there are indeed many poor effects of passive smoking. Should you be around smoking, you can remove yourself from the situation, as well as educate the individual smoking the negative effects of smoking. The effects of passive smoking are indeed harmful to your health as well as the health of others. Informing those around you will not only be saving your life but the lives of many others as well.
